Well, here we are again and it’s the end of the racing season and I have another prized signed diecast car from this season. Now I have a lot of model cars, trains and planes and heck, even a few submarines but once a year I go all out. Who ever won the cup that year I get their model car and get it signed. I have been doing this since the mid-1980s when I was old enough to go to the track by myself. I got my first car signed at the start of next season from the previous year’s winner and it was on after that. While meeting and getting up close with the drivers is getting harder and harder every year, getting a real sign replica car is getting easier and easier with the internets and the e-bay.
I had been housing these signed cars just on my shelf and would keep on the dusting but then I saw these wood, felt and acrylic wonders. I was delighted to see that these gems were available at price breaks for ordering larger quantities. So I bought 30 of them so that I can host all my cars in the same fashion. Now my den is outfitted with the memories of a lifetime of racing winners and each of my signed prized models is safe from dust and dirty fingers!

If you are like me then you are always looking for more and more ways to creatively host and showcase your valuable diecast Nascar collection then these cases are for you! Trains are an iconic part of the fabric of our dear nation. The big iron meant a many thing to many different people. Some lost land to the expansion of the tracks, some found work, some lost work, some hear it as an annoyance and then there is a guy like me who remembers fondly the wailing of the steam engines and looked to the rails for salvation. Maybe I was just a hay seed from western conn. who listened too a little too much of the Boss but I dreamed of jumping a train and heading out to the west. I can still hear those wheels jingle on the wind. This train case holds the only model I own...

There are sports fans, then there are sports fanatics and then there are the dedicated masses who eat, breathe and live for their teams. Then there is me. I not only bleed for my team but I have dedicated my life to my favorite sport: Nascar. I follow the circit all around the country and have every diecast model of every version of every car my favorite driver/team has ever put out. Not only do I have these model cars but I also have each one of them signed. The day I get them signed by the driver I send them home to my cousin Jim-Bob and he goes into the basement and grabs one of these acrylic cases and put the new signed model into a case and then puts it up in my den for when I come back after the season is over.

I am the starting goalie on the Topeka Tornados, the Kansas based men’s adult hockey league team of recent YouTube fame. While we are now best known for the octopus/chipmunk fiasco (if you haven’t heard of it, search for it on YouTube, as per request of my lawyer, that is all I am allowed to say about the incident), we are also a mighty fine team with some real prospects. And this year we won the coveted Corn Cup trophy. This is the first time in the last 10 years we have won the award and seeing as how I am the captain I am solely responsible for keeping the trophy safe for the rest of the year. In between bringing it to grocery store openings, having the finest sparkling boons farm wine being drank out it and using it to baptize babies at the local Baptist Church the silver lady of my dreams resides in this black framed acrylic trophy holder. Well with the regular season swiftly coming to a close and the Patriots of New England clinching the AFC East for the hundredth time in a row so ends my fantasy football season. And well, I needed a trophy holder. I know what you are thinking, ohh look at this jerk bragging about his winning fantasy season, he should pay more attention to work and his kids, gosh his wife must hate him… Truth be told, all of those things are 100% not true as I got a promotion this fall, was at every soccer game and cross country meet my kids participated in and as for my relationship with my wife, well let’s just say year 18 makes me feel like I’m 18 all over again!
So how does he do it? How does one man excel at work, find time for his children and lavish all sorts of attention on his wife and win a season of fantasy football? Well my friends, he doesn’t. I got killed this season. I didn’t win a single game. Not a one. Not even a tie. And the by-laws of my football league clearly state that if a person have a completely winless season that they must display the trophy of shame until their first win in the next season. And since I don’t want my co-workers, who also happen to be in the league, to mess with my trophy I bought this trophy case. It locks with a Allen wrench (half of these guys don’t know what an Allen wrench is so I’m safe there) and has nice crystal clear paneling for a clean and crisp view. Now one may ask why I am so content with having this ohh so shameful award and the answer is simple, I lost this season with the league but won with my family! And if the Stinker Tinker award has to be on my desk for another five years I will be happy knowing that my family always wins!

I’m not saying that I am the best horseshoe player in the greater Rhode Island area but I am also not not saying that I am not the best shoe tosser this side north of Misquamicut. I’m sure that I don’t have to tell you that there is a yearly contest in Portsmouth, RI at the Glen in which contestants from around New England and southern Canada compete in the ancient sport of kings: horseshoes. This is a long standing tradition which dates back to the 1700’s when Portsmouth was founded on the Portsmouth Compact by Anne Hutchinson and her motley crew of religious outcasts. While Roger Williams was haggling with Miantonomi for rights to the island the gang had to do something to pass the time and when a simple un-cobbling of a horse lead to a playful horseshoe fight the game of horseshoes as we all know and love it came in being. William Coddington had tossed a medium sized shoe at Nicholas Easton and by accident rung it around a tent stake. John Clarke bet him he couldn’t do it again and so began the games glorious future.
I am the reigning champion of these games and I only use this black framed display case to house my trophies. The 12”w x 24”h size is perfect for the heritage horseshoe trophy which I have won in the last 6 of the 10 years. It is a good thing that these cases are sold at a price break for higher quantities.

Ever since Shogun Assassin came out on the US Market in 1980 I have been hooked and entrenched in the arts of the samurai and shogun culture. I have made several pilgrimages to the Tokyo National Museum and Japan itself to find myself some authentic swords not the junk on TV at 3am that comes with tassels, a set of steak knives and a salad spinner...no I am always searching for authentic Japanese steel. I know that most true pieces of samurai weaponry are holed up in museums and private collections of millionaires but for me if it has been hand crafted in the same traditions that have been used since the mid-600s then it is enough for me. The reason why I have such an affinity for the samurai is that in an emperor driven society ranked by class and social segregation the samurai has transcended all social strata and time to be the most iconoclastic of all the Japanese classes of people.
The samurai was generally a farmer who was called into duty to defend their states and when not in times of battle were seen as civilian public servants. From the lowest and most dangerous class to an elevated status around the modern world the samurai is now an icon of the everyday warrior and that is why I collect their hardware. The case here is ideal for housing my steel, the security screws ensure that nobody will just open it and start playing with my collectables.

For our tenth wedding anniversary my loving and patient wife got me a whole team signed football. I have an antiques shop in Brooklyn, NY and I love it but I am not set on living in the past. Sounds a little crazy but let me explain. I love old things, I love seeing the evolution of advertising, marketing, packaging, and products but I also have an iPad, a smartphone and am obsessed with technology. My whole mindset is that there should be an integration between the old and the new for there would be no new without the old. I have designed my shop to be a hip new place that sells antiques.
I have modern lighting fixtures, clean bright white walls and have taken a boutique style idea and applied it to the antiques. I understand the place and draw of the old dusty shop in the rural places with exposed beams and warped wooden floors but not for me and not for my shop. So the Red Sox are looking more and more like a .500 team this year which will mean that I will have no real excuse not to do yard work in late September and October. My only viable excuse not to rake leaves on a Sunday afternoon is watching Red Sox playoff baseball on TV. That is the only reason my wife will take for my lack of enthusiasm for spending countless thankless hours picking up wet decaying leaves so that the snow can fall on a clean lawn a few weeks later. And because of lack-luster pitching and an onslaught of injuries the boys of summer will be just that this year, a summer team with no fall classic to keep me happy on the couch with a cold beer.
With that being said, I am a die-hard fan and will begrudgingly rack the lawn and trim the hedges one last time come October thinking what moves we can make in the off-season and how we can cut the payroll down but before all that happens I have a nice fun project to tackle! There is a house, in New Orleans, it’s called the Risen Sun and it’s been the re-birth of many a poor treated product. The Risen Sun is my second hand store and is the belle of the bayou when it comes to hard to find antiques and vintage materials. I don’t sell my goods on the internet, only in my Spanish moss choked tin roofed transformed auction hall. I have nothing against technology but to say that I flip merchandise is to say that McDonald’s sells hamburgers, it’s an understatement. I would need dedicated in house photographers, an editing team, a web team and a shipping department and that is just too much wasted money for this southern girl to spend on an item that could only be here a day or week. One wouldn’t normally equate a liquor store with handmade crafts but that person would have not visited my humble little store in the downtown Montpelier. I spent the first twenty years of my professional career in sales and spent almost all of that time on the road. It was a grueling lot in life but it put dinner on the table for the family back home in Vermont. Not ready to retire but needing a change I opened up a liquor store in the heart of our state’s capitol. Our capitol city is not like the capitols of the states below us, ours is a tree-lined, river cut little hamlet set in the valley. When I opened my store I decided to take my wife’s drinking habits as my business model. No, she is no alcoholic but she does like her chardonnay, rose, and pre-mixed white Russian drinks!
With so many liquor stores catering to men, I decided to design my store to the fairer sex. Of course I have Bud and Pabst but there is a large selection of wines, a sitting area, cook books that feature wine pairings, there is a local cheese section and I have fresh bread delivered every day. I have to tell you friends, it worked. With wine tastings every Friday afternoon my little shop is a meeting point for the women of our little city so that is why I bought this display case. I put some of my daughters photography on the wall and tourists were constantly asking about the shots and I even sold a few of her prints. That got me thinking and I tapped into the local arts and crafts community and now have a decent offering of local produced wares. My roommates and I are very competitive group of guys. I just opened my newest sports memorabilia shop this time in Newport, Rhode Island. My chain has a heavy focus on the four major sports: baseball, basketball, hockey and football. It’s baseball season again, and that means that it’s also fantasy baseball season as well. The league in my office is a tough lot and I spent a lot of time this winter scouting prospects and analyzing stats.
